My Cultural Agility Poem for Authors
As authors we must learn to be culturally agile.
We are not mermaids and vampires, but still, we tell their stories.
We impose our beliefs and our values on our characters.
We create the spectrum of right and wrong.
As authors we write about the world around us.
About the people we observe around us.
About the situations we observe around us.
About the responses we observe around us.
We look around us. What do we see?
As authors we are educating our readers.
They read our words and learn.
They read our words and feel.
They read our words and think.
As authors we hold an enormous responsibility.
Inside the pages of a book, we are building a society.
Inside the pages of a book, we are operating a community.
Inside the pages of a book, we decide who is locked out.
Who gets seen and who remains invisible.
As authors we must learn to be culturally agile…
